Local facts:
- Cape town was originally inhabited by nomadic people who hunted for their food and ate edible berries and leaves.
-In 1488 Bartholomew Dias was recorded to have made a great voyage in attempts to make his way east. He discovered Cape town when his ship was sent off course and originally gave it the name 'Cabo Tormentoso' (Cape of Storms) but then turned to the 'Cape of Good Hope', promising a sea route to the riches of Asia. |
-British forces landed on the Cape Peninsula in
June 1795, and occupied Cape Town. Their purpose was to secure the settlement
before it fell into the hands of Napoleon.
-The original European population of Cape Town did not like the mood of liberalism and change and revolted, leaving Cape town in a small civil war. -Nelson Mandela, famous political leader resided and was imprisoned here. |
